Instalación sonora reactiva

(English below)

Tempt the Word

Reactive Sound Sculpture

The project is part of the general framework of collaboration with the Zaleo nursery school and its attention to a specific culture of childhood.

The project responds to the invitation of the Zaleo Infant School to take part at the XX Anniversary of Enterarte, at the Daoíz y Velarde Cultural Center in Madrid. Enterarte is a working group of the Movement of Pedagogical Renewal «Acción Educativa», which wants to promote reflection, research and creation in the educational field, to generate, manage and develop innovative projects of artistic education. Later it was presented as a site-specific intervention, in the nursery class of the Zaleo Infant School.

A Pure Data patch uses the input signal from a microphone to trigger prerecorded baby babbling sounds, projected through one or more speakers. The microphone does not amplify the voice itself, but instead replaces it with babbling.

Babbling is an expression of an experience that has not yet been encoded. It is an immediate and enraptured voice; a voice prior to speech. Before entering the collective territory of speech, we build a phoné for ourselves. We accumulate sound materials, we play with their rhythms, we try and understand our own body in that tireless attempt and in the handling of the voice, we stalk the word, but precisely being beyond the word makes that place of origin an unavailable moment to remember.

Our collaboration with the Zaleo Infant School wants to seek attention, strategies and instruments for the memory of that stage whose understanding and estimation is traditionally subject to the acquisition of language, and thus conceived as a condition of a greater process that will culminate in its own disappearance.

The sound record of the babbling made thanks to the involvement of the families, emphasizes the aesthetic value of these sound manifestations and their proximity to some musical approaches, but it also aims to show that the conquest of speech means a huge loss.

The interactive device takes the form of mutual invasion, of the indiscernible, questioning the relationships between logos and phoné, but also the nature of communication or the possibilities of understanding the other. The work forces us to speak by pushing speech to a limit of itself. It invites a certain return to babbling, to a form of forgetting language, relegated to being an imperative to listen to otherness, but an otherness that, like my own underside, always manifests itself underhanded me, covered by my sticky voice.
